Improving Care for Black and Minority Ethnic Children in Foster Care

A one day workshop covering the principles of care, support and needs of Black and minority ethnic children and young people

Aims of the course

• The training offers an opportunity to look at the importance of culture and customs.
• It includes valuable personal insights as well as practical tools and ideas that can help empower foster carers to nurture a positive self identity in the BME children in their care.
• There is also an opportunity to reflect on an individual's values and beliefs and to gain a better understanding of racism and discrimination and how these impact on learning and development
• This course discusses the unique characteristics of communicating across cultural lines.
• It also discusses various cultural perspectives, and the skills and abilities needed to address them in the home and community.

The course covers issues of:

• Dealing with personal and cultural care needs
• Dealing with the importance of identity
• Exploring children’s experience of racism
• Exploring the importance of religion and belief
• Providing practical advice and resources on building diversity into children’s everyday lives Including black history as part of children’s development
• Recalling the definition of black and minority ethnic
• Identifying the major components of race and culture
• Identifying principal barriers to cultural competence
• Identifying skills for improving cultural competencies

Previous Knowledge Required

The good news is that no prior learning knowledge or experience is essential to take this course. This course is openly available to anyone wishing to learn more about race, culture and customs of black and minority ethnic children and young people, and would like to take part in a highly rewarding interactive and participative course.
