Anti-Racism Open Course

Understand how racism operates, recognise bias and privilege, challenge racism confidently and develop practical skills for active anti-racism.

People showing solidarity against racism

Anti-Racism Open Course

Becoming actively anti-racist means recognising how racism operates — historically, socially and institutionally — and taking deliberate steps to challenge it. This course helps participants explore bias, privilege and discrimination and understand how these can shape everyday experiences. Through practical examples, guided reflection and discussion, delegates develop the confidence to recognise racism, respond constructively and contribute to more equitable and anti-racist workplace cultures.

Open vs In‑House Courses

Open courses are public Equality and Diversity UK training dates that anyone can book onto, ideal when you only need training for one or two people.

In‑house courses are private sessions delivered exclusively for a group of people from your organisation, on a date that suits you, with the option to tailor the content to your staff and setting.

What Does Being Anti-Racist Mean in Practice?

Many people would describe themselves as “not racist”. Anti-racism asks us to go further.

It means developing the awareness to recognise racism when it occurs, reflecting on our own assumptions and influence, being prepared to challenge rather than remain silent, and identifying practical ways to contribute to racial equality.

Recognise

Develop your awareness of overt and subtle racism, racial bias, stereotypes, microaggressions and patterns of exclusion or inequality.

Reflect

Explore assumptions, privilege, lived experience and the difference between our intentions and the impact our words, behaviours and decisions may have on others.

Challenge

Build confidence to respond to racist comments, behaviours and practices, challenge assumptions and navigate uncomfortable conversations constructively.

Act

Move beyond awareness by identifying practical actions you can take to support racial equality, inclusion, allyship and positive change.

What Will I Learn?

The course explores how racism can operate through individual behaviour and everyday interactions, but also through organisational practices and wider systems and structures.

You will consider overt and covert racism, stereotypes, racial bias, microaggressions and subtle acts of exclusion, including how experiences that may appear small in isolation can have a significant cumulative impact.

We also explore intention and impact, helping you consider why good intentions do not necessarily prevent our words, behaviours or decisions from affecting somebody negatively.

The aim is not simply to increase awareness of racism, but to help you develop the knowledge, language and confidence to recognise it, talk about it and respond constructively when it occurs.

Understanding Privilege Without Blame

Conversations about privilege can sometimes become uncomfortable because privilege may be interpreted as meaning that somebody has had an easy life or has never experienced disadvantage.

That is not what privilege means in this context.

The course explores how race can shape the barriers people are more or less likely to encounter, while recognising that our experiences are also influenced by many other aspects of identity and circumstance.

White Privilege

Understand how being White can mean that race is less likely to create particular barriers, disadvantages or forms of scrutiny in everyday life.

White Fragility

Explore why conversations about racism can sometimes trigger discomfort, defensiveness or withdrawal, and how we can respond more constructively.

White Saviourism

Consider the difference between meaningful solidarity and approaches that centre the helper or speak over the people we intend to support.
